Why R&J’s Deserves a Visit

When we last had some friends in town, we ducked in on a whim. True, the place doesn’t look impressive on the outside, but as soon as you step in—it’s like you’ve entered a forgotten era. You’re immediately greeted by a fantastic bar lined with stools and dripping with style. Further back, you’ll find private booths and tables perfect for some intimate conversation. If you’re craving a get-away, a moment where you feel you might be in a nostalgic movie, or just a break from the day — this place is special.

Ambiance

The place is DARK—no windows—but that adds to the appeal of the place. This might as well be the location for an episode of an American set Endeavor series. Their cocktails are fantastic and they definitely don’t skimp on the alcohol. We enjoyed a nice sampler appetizer but we had other plans for our main food so I can’t comment on that. Their steak looked fantastic though.

Favorite Drinks Here

No drink is a BAD drink here. A few of our favs:

• Vieux Carré (you might want to stop at one… they’re strong)
• Classic Old Fashion with Rye

Side note: They don’t have Cointreau in house, so if you order a SideCar, don’t expect that liquor in it.

History

The head chef, Chef Russ Johnson went through treasured family recipe and a historical menu collection at the New York Public Library to find the true vintage menus from the 1950s and 1960s that would inspire this atmosphere. Really, the impact of the sentimental design is felt at the R&J. It’s unique, (and it’s something that’s rarely done well.)

Side note: Second time we headed here, we put it wrong in our GPS, and ended up at J&Rs … a trucking place 20 mins out side of town, totally different place. One good conversation, and we didn’t see we were nearly across town. AVOID THIS MISTAKE.

Tips:

Show up on a Monday.

They have happy hour on Mondays all day. ALL. DAY. Listen, I know you have to work, but skip the Monday night football. Dress up like it’s the 60’s and grab a Vieux Carré cocktail (or two). Best. Monday. Ever.

Parking.

Admittedly, this is a pretty hip spot in OKC. Parking can sometimes be a hassle. They have limited parking in front of their door, but its OKC, not NYC. Street parking is always easy to grab not too far away. So if their lot is full, don’t fret. Plus, if you see a good spot on your approach, you probably should just go for it.

 

COVID UPDATE:

Is it COVID “friendly?” Sort of. There is an outside patio area… but honestly, part of the charm of this place is the decor and atmosphere. The staff mask up, but beyond that you are in a pretty closed in environment. We were all fully vaccinated and went right before the Delta variant crushed all of our hopes and dreams. If you’re being cautious, this might be one to wait on until case loads decline again.
